We work across the whole quartz chain — feedstock, fusion, forming, fabrication, specification, qualification and installation. Most clients need us at one point in it. A few need us at all of them.

Service 01

Material selection & specification

The decision between fused natural quartz and synthetic fused silica is made once and lived with for years. We work it properly: the real thermal and chemical environment, the contamination budget, the hydroxyl target, the mechanical duty, and the cost of the part over its service life rather than at the purchase order.

The output is a specification a supplier can be held to — measured properties, test methods, acceptance limits and incoming inspection criteria — not a trade name and a hope.

Service 02

Sourcing & supplier qualification

Quartz supply is more concentrated than most buyers realise. Commercially viable high-purity quartz deposits exist in only a handful of places worldwide, the number of refiners able to reach semiconductor grade is smaller, and the producers of synthetic boule can be counted on two hands. A tier-two single point of failure is common and rarely mapped.

We audit suppliers on the things that predict performance — fusion route, furnace control, annealing practice, metrology, traceability and change control — and we help establish a credible second source before it is needed rather than during a shortage.

Service 03

Boule, ingot & tube engineering

For clients who make the material rather than buy it, we work on the production problem directly: deposition and fusion control, annealing schedules and residual stress, striae and homogeneity, coring and slicing yield, tube drawing dimensional control, and flame working practice.

The recurring theme is that a large fraction of finished-part defects are created after the glass is good — in annealing, in machining, in flame working and in cleaning. We look at the whole route rather than only the melt.

Service 04

Failure & contamination investigation

Quartz parts fail in a small number of characteristic ways, and each points somewhere specific. Devitrification points at surface contamination, alkali or handling. Sag points at hydroxyl and temperature profile. Bubble growth points at the melt interface and the fusion route. Particles point at fabrication and cleaning. Metallic contamination points at the base material or the tooling that touched it.

We work backwards from the symptom to the cause, then write the specification or process change that stops it recurring — which is usually the part clients actually needed.

Service 05

Fab development & installation

Building a quartz fabrication line, or a facility that consumes quartz at volume, is a mechanical and facilities project as much as a materials one. We support layout, utilities, equipment selection, installation, commissioning, acceptance and the ramp that follows.

This work is led by principals who have installed and started up production equipment for four decades — which mostly means anticipating the problems that only appear during install.

Service 06

Equipment, training & technology transfer

Fusion furnaces, drawing towers, glass lathes, CNC finishing and metrology — specified, evaluated, commissioned and accepted. And then the part that determines whether any of it works: training the engineers and operators who will run it every day.

Technology transfer engagements are structured to leave capability behind. We write the process documentation, train against it, and measure whether the training took.

How an engagement runs.

STEP 01

Initial conversation

A call to understand the problem and the constraints. No charge, and no obligation. If we are not the right people for it, we will say so and, where we can, point you at who is.

STEP 02

Scope & proposal

A written scope: the question to be answered, the work required, who leads it, the deliverable, the timeline and the fee. Confidentiality agreed before any technical detail changes hands.

STEP 03

Investigation

Document and data review, site visits where useful, supplier discussions, and analysis. We work with your engineers rather than around them.

STEP 04

Findings & recommendation

A written report with the reasoning shown, not just the conclusion — so your team can challenge it, and can apply the same reasoning next time without us.

STEP 05

Implementation support

Optional and often the most valuable part: supplier discussions, specification rewrites, qualification trials, installation and training through to a working result.

Engagement formats

Short technical opinions, defined projects with a fixed scope, retained advisory arrangements, and longer technology-transfer or installation programmes. Remote or on-site.

Independence

We do not sell material, hold inventory, or take commission from suppliers. Our recommendation on a grade or a vendor is the one we believe — which is the entire reason to bring in an outside opinion.
